On Waitangi Day, Thursday the 6th February we are hosting our annual Saddle Island Trophy event. It will be a day full of fun and adventure for all, not to be missed!
We are delighted this year to again be welcoming our Foundation and Manly Sailing Club sponsors, along with the kind support of Gulf Harbour Yacht Club members’.
Pack your togs and get ready for a family friendly adventure as we make our way out to Saddle Island for a picnic lunch and some classic kiwi beach activities! Tug of war, frisbee, beach cricket, pétanque and exciting inshore Feva racing are bound to keep you wildly entertained!
Families’ and junior/youth sailors will be invited to board one of a number of keel boats taking part in a fun race over, while the more experienced sailors will tackle the 7 Nautical Mile adventure in their chosen sailing dinghy, all for the achievement and to be crowned the 2020 Saddle Island trophy holder!
The keel boat fleet will take part in a single start handicap race, while the dinghy fleet will be given a Mark Foy start with the faster boats starting last.

FAQs
- What should I pack to go on a keelboat? Warm clothing, a jacket, suncream, hat, snacks, a drink bottle and a buoyancy aid
- Are there toilets on board the keel boats? Most keelboats will have some on board facilities of some description
- How do vessels communicate on the water? All vessels shall carry a radio and monitor VHF channel 77
- What if i injure myself? Signal the nearest safety boat or alert your skipper. Each safety boat and Keel boat will have a First Aid kit on board. In an emergency, dial 111 or coastguard on VHF Channel 16
- Are there bins at our destination? Yes, we will be able to dispose of some rubbish on land.
- What do I do for food? Please pack a picnic lunch or at least some snacks and water. We are intending on having a Sausage Sizzle ($2/sausage) at our destination - Fire ban permitting!
- Do you need a buoyancy aid if you are sailing on a keelboat? Yes, all participants allocated to a keelboat must wear a buoyancy aid at all times.
- How do I know what boat I am on? All boat allocations will be communicated at or before briefing
- What 'open' class can I sail? Eligible classes include most centreboard or foiling classes except Optimist and Bic
- Are there enough charter dinghies for everyone? There are limited RCSF dinghy classes available.
- Does it cost to use a Foundation boat on the day? No, there is no charter cost for this event
- Will it be cancelled? Not due to a little rain! However, if the conditions will jeopardise safety or make the day unpleasant, then the organising authorities will communicate an alternative plan to you at briefing
- What happens if there is an emergency? Stay calm, and follow the instructions of your skipper
